How do I change where my domain name is registered and into my name?

If you've had someone else register a domain name for you, chances are, they registered it in their name and that they will be the ones to receive billing notices and are techinically the "owner" of your domain. Therefore, it is a good idea to transfer your domain into your name and into a domain name registration account that you control.

Here's how to make the transfer:

  1. Set up an account with an accredited domain name registration company such as www.GoDaddy.com – We use Go Daddy so these steps are for them, other registrars steps will vary.

  2. Purchase and initiate a domain registrar transfer at Go Daddy. This usually costs around $10. This will start the process to move the domain name into your name. Simply follow the onscreen steps. If you wish, you can call Go Daddy’s free and friendly concierge service at (480) 505-8866.

  3. Email the previous owner/registrant if necessary and let them know that you’ve started to move your domain name into your name. It is likely that they will need to provide you with a transfer authorization code.

  4. You’ll receive an email from Go Daddy providing you with a Transaction ID and a Security Code.

  5. Log into your Go Daddy account and enter the Transaction ID, Security Code and Authorization code and within 5-7 days, the domain will be transferred into your Go Daddy account.

  6. Once the transfer is complete, log into your account and update all of the contact information with the names and information you want to be on the domain name
